It was so exciting to see the siding start to go up, but it was scary too. We were so afraid of how the Hardiplank lap siding (aka: Select CedarMill) would look. Especially because it is the "stained" color, not the usual solid color you see on most homes with HardiPlank. This stuff is stained to look just like cedar lap slding. It comes in Mahagony, Cedar, and Redwood stains. The Mahagony seems to be the most popular color from others we asked, so we ended up going with it. If we don't like it, well, then we can just paint over it someday. I didn't like the Cedar stain, as it looked too orange (I've also seen it on a house and I was right... it's too orange, but it may look better if placed amongst the woods, just not on a city street like we saw). We loved the Mahagony Hardi we saw on a very nice home in a local upscale neighborhood, so we felt confident this was the right choice, heck if they can get away with it, we should too, right? In these photos however, it looks quite dark and reddish. But don't worry, it's not. I was pleasantly surprised that it looks better then I had thought it would. Whew! What a relief! I just hope it still looks as good in full sun on the south side. By the way, I gave Ted (our siding guy) a gadget that helps hang the Hardi if you are doing it alone. He had help, but he said he still used it and loved it. I purchased it at the Lumber place we purchased the Hardi from.
As for the trim, it is an engineered laminate, called Socomi-Lam. It is guaranteed to not warp, split or crack, yada yada. A lot of the developers around here like to use it apparently, as it is so nice to work with, comes pre-primed and has a wonderful wood grain to it on one side and smooth on the other. We will obviously be painting it, as I don't think the primer gray will work.
